My next lens will probably be a 50mm prime for my Canon. I believe there is the mk1 with a metal body and the mk11 which is plastic? Is it worth buying a second hand mk1 when the mk11 is not too expensive new?
Thanks

The Mk1 does NOT have a metal body! Only the mount (the bit that goes into the body) is metal! I have the Mk11 and it is agreat lens for the price, plastic mount or not!

I have the MK1 and its heavier than the MK2, i dont know if it means it's better built or not but i got mine very sneakily on ebay by googling for old canon EOS cameras and found one in the states and had it shipped over for just over half of what they are going for. They were bundled as kit with the old EOS 650 and 850 etc. I've had no probs with mine whatsoever but you have to remember that they are 20 years old now and the AF is not the best. It hunts a lot on the 400d in low light but then again the new one hunts in low light too. It does a lot better on the 40d but so would the MK2. Optically, they're pretty much the same glass and both perform well. Unless you can get one cheap like i did or you want to own a piece of canon history (lol) you're looking at about £130 for one in good condition.

So there's not a lot of difference apart from it being heavier and having the distance scale and the metal mount. If you want one, go for it but make sure you get one in good condition
