Nikon 10-24mm or 12-24mm?

Been looking at the Nikon 10-24mm and the Nikon 12-24mm wide angle lenses...can someone explain what the difference is between the two?

I know one is f3.5-4.5 and the other is fixed f4 but is there really any difference between them?

Which is the better lens? I have been asked by an interior designer to provide before and after shots.
Is one of them just an updated version?

Thankyou in advance,

Neil.

Hi Neil...i've had the 12-24 f4 it is a really nice lens and would suit your D7000 perfectly!

I have not used the 10-24 (slightly wider) but know one or two guys that love theirs so would say give it a go if you can pick one up for the right price>

I don't think there is a whole lot to separate them other than the obvious differences in focal length and apertures.

A couple more to consider would be the tokina 11-16 2.8, which I rate higher than both of the nikons. There is also the absurdly wide sigma 8-16 which I have no experience of.

As a cheaper option, have you considered a stitched panorama? Buying one of the above seems a lot of outlay for one job.

Thankyou Steve and Graham,

It's going to be continuos work with the designer so not too worried about the outlay....didn't really want to go down the panorama route even though I could easily do it as I as produce virtual tours..I use a Nikon fisheye for that and the distorsion is way too much for what they want...sometimes it's nice not having to stitch things together for a finished product! lol

:thankyou:

Neil

Just been looking at the reviews for the Tokina lens.....they are all very positive...blimey...now there are three lenses to choose between!

Yeah, they're a lovely lens. One of my all time favourites. A bit limited in terms of range at the longer end but it sounds like that wouldn't concern you.

Was in the same boat as you're in now :D
I decided to go for the 12-24mm, as it has less distortion than the 10-24mm... and shooting on manual settings, I was also fairly fed up with variable apertures.

One tiny thing: if you later want to sell your lens, the Nikkor holds its value better than Tokina...

OTOH you can probably get a second-hand Tokina cheaper than a Nikkor

Hi Jan,

Actually had just made my decision earlier today to go for the 12-24mm.....found a good deal on one so it helped my decision a little as it was my prefered choice of lens!
