Nikon 105mm vr with 1.4 any good?

Should be geting a 105 vr tomorrow but also toying with the idea of possibly using it with a 1.4x,anyone here used that combo or even with the 1,7?
 
I used mine with a 1.7x TC when I had it. Worked fine, maintained VR and gives you a nice 180mm [approx] VR macro/tele.

Only sold both on because I was re-arranging lenses a bit and now have a sigma 150mm macro - planning to get a sigma 1.4 or 2x to go with that. I believe you get greater than 1:1 macro this way too?
 
Yeah, not pretty! I bought the 1.7x on here for £200. If you can find a used one for near that, it gives you another lens really, worth it if you plan to use it a lot.

Yeah was comtemplating that as well Phil..were they handheld?
 
The trouble with extensions tubes is they're no good for the tele side of things. With a TC on, you can go straight from macro to tele without having to fumble around taking tubes off. If you're just out for macro tubes are great, tricky to get to grips with but you can pull some great results out of them.

Unless you have a newer AF model though that focuses at f8, you will lose AF with a TC.
 
With a 2x and 1.4x stacked you might run into problems but with just one you should be OK.
 
I had no trouble with AF with the 1.7 + 105 shooting into the distance, for macro, well, I manual focus always doing that.
 
I think Phil is thinking focusing in close, for macro, it does stop down automatically, like any macro lens. But at normal distances it is indeed f/2.8, and with my 1.7 TC I was essentially getting a 180mm f/4.8

It will be the same as a f4-5.6 lens. The maximum aperture will be f5.6. Most macros will be actually a variable aperture - usually f2.8-f4.8 (stopping down with closer focus).

No no I was talking about normal distances. If I put a 1.4x on my D7k I'd lose AF because the maximum aperture would be about f6.

I have used it with all 3 (individually !) and it works really well. I don't AF with macro in the majority of situations so even if it lost AF I wouldn't be worrying. Can't say I remember now.

Tripod, stopped down, mirror-up lock, remote release - lovely.

There's something up with that chart Phil. I was getting AF, and max of f/4.8 with it attached to the 1.7 II
 
Been having a read up this afternoon and also read that people had no probs with af...:shrug:
 
I've also used it with the 1.7tc a few times & works fine.
As said though, manual focus is best if poss ...... unless you're trying for bees in flight!

At normal distances, it's f/2.8, I'm pretty sure. Will have a play tomorrow to check. IIRC, my old Tamron 90mm went down to 3.5 at 1:1 but IMNRC!
