Nikon 105mn micro

Hi
This is my first time posting. Does anyone have the nikon 105mm micro. If so is it any good I'm looking to buy it for portrait work and obviously some macro photography. Also can anyone recommend a better lens. Nikon fit.
 
I have this lens and am happy with it, though I wouldn't say it's a stellar performer (the purple fringing was a bit of a shock when I first got it, but can be corrected in PP).

If I was buying again I'd have a very close look at the Sigma 150mm. Remember that for macro the longer the focal length the longer the lens to subject distance for a given magnification. Depends what you want to take macro shots of but may be a consideration if you want to shoot insects.

Are you shooting fx? If dx then the lens might be a little long for portraiture work.
 
When I was using Nikon this was one of my favorite lenses, I didn't find a problem with ca but very rarely used it wide open especially in high contrast areas, would be a good portrait choice on an fx but maybe a little on the long side for a crop camera where the 60mm afs micro may prove a better choice.
 
Got the older d lens.. :) I think they've upgraded to vr mki or mkii now...

For portraits... 50mm f1.4? or pref 35mm f1.8 (170ukp new from jessops online)

I own the 105mm 2.8 VR macro, and I use it as my Tele/portrait lens. I rarely use it for macro, but having the option is a bonus. I use it on a 1.5 crop and have no problems with it as I also have the 35 and 50 for shorter range. I find it very sharp and accurate, excellent colour and not too slow on AF when the limited is on. I think there are 2 versions of this lens now, identical other than origin of manufacture. Mine is marked with made in Japan as I bought mine ages ago. I believe some are marked with another country, but I dont think it really matters.
 
Have the 105 macro, it's a great lens. One rarely mentioned benefit of it is that it's compatible with the TCxx-E teleconverters, and they do not change MFD. So you get a 1.4x 140mm f4, 1.7x 170mm f4.8, or a 2x 210mm f5.6 macro as well.
 
I have the Sigma version, the only non-Nikon lens in my kit bag bar an old Kiron prime (also good!) and it produces great results. It's worth considering if you want to save some money. I wouldn't recommend some of the other Sigma lenses, but this one represents a very good alternative to it's Nikon counterpart.

I own this lens and a TCE 2.0 and didn't know that! Off to have a play once the kids are in bed. Never even occurred to me..maybe I should read the instruction book.
 
Yes, and talking of compatibility, that's one issue with the Sigma version. It apparently needs to be chipped by Sigma to work on the D7000, a negative I forgot to mention above.
