Thinking of buying one of these to replace my kit 18-55 lens. It seems to have good reviews, has anyone got any opinions? It's for my D300.

Recently sold one due to upgrade to full frame. It's a cracking lens, near perfect ratio for size vs range, much better optically than the stock lenses supplied with bodies.
Can't recommend it highly enough.

Does the D300 support the VR system?

The VR is in the lens, the body it's attached to didn't matter.

So VR1 and VR2 is irrelavent to the camera body then? Thats good to know.

It's the amount of reduction you can get away with, not body compatibility .
