Nikon 16-85mm or 18-200mm, which one???

Hi,

With Christmas money arriving in a few days I am looking for an 'all-round' lens to replace the 17-55 kit lens that came with the D5000.

I shoot motorsport a bit and have a 70-300 for that.

I am looking at the Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 or the 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 and hopefully whichever I get will live on the camera most of the time as a general purpose lens shooting anything from landscape, portraits and my son on his skateboard etc.

I know there is around £100 difference in price but I suppose my question really is would I use the 85-200mm range that often in general use?

I would appreciate your views of both these lenses especially if you have used both.

Or if you would recommend another lens that would better suit as a walkabout lens.

I currently have:
Sigma 10-20
Nikon 50 f/1.4
Nikon 17-55 (kit)
Nikon 70-300.

Paul, if you like sharp pics then get the 16-85, its a good range and fits nicely into your collection, I havent owned the 18-200 but it wont be as sharp as the shorter FL 16-85 which is a pity, if it was I would definitly own one.
The new Tamron is 18-270 and reviews say very sharp if F8 and 50mm-100mm but very soft after 200mm so it depends what you want? the focal reach and soft to very soft or shorter and clear crisp pictures?
Remember its 24mm - 127.5mm in 35mm terms:thumbs:
