Nikon 18-135 dead AF

About 6 months ago I picked up a "good value" Nikon 18-135 DX lens in the knowledge that the autofocus was faulty. It's proven to be quite a useful walkaround lens (I think it was a kit lens with a D90 at some stage) but it would be even more useful if I could get the autofocus working again.

The motor works but it isn't able to lock focus and seems to whizz up and down the whole focus range. Does anyone know if this is fixable? Apparently it is a common fault on these lenses. I read on here some time ago of a Nikon lens repairer in Essex but cannot find the details - if there was someone local it would be useful!

I did try and take it apart myself but there were a lot more bits inside than I anticipated and I had to get one of the kids to put it back together again (they've got small fingers and good eyesight).

Thanks
