Hi there,

Just a quick bit of advice needed please.. Is it worth selling up on my Nikon 18-55mm VR to change it to the Nikon 18-70mm. Not sure how much I would get for a mint kit lens VR but the 18-70 is £149 and with a more varied focal range seems a tempting offer until I can afford the 24-70.

Anyone have experience with the two they could offer please? :)

I was watching a Nikon 18-55 VR on ebay today. It ended up selling for around £70

not sure you'll get much difference for your £80 - what about adding the 50/1.8 for the same money ??

The 18-55mm VR is handy, but the 18-70mm (if you can cope wihtout VR) is a much better lens. Track one down quick as Nikon have stopped making them. Got one from Jessops (they were outstanding) for £149 Absolute Bargin, replaced a previous one that had been abused and suffered for it.

Thats what grabbed my attention, Jessops selling off at £149. I am aware I wont get much for my kit lens but it really does gather dust! I dont even use it for landscapes anymore! I just feel the extra reach of the 18-70 will make it a much better day to day walk about lens. My 18-55 is going on eBay tomorrow and I will be making phone calls about the new lens *fingers crossed* Thanks all :)

mate..I had a 18-55mm, its alright but it does feel very plasticy, but trust me, I gave it to my gf and snagged a mint second hand 18-70mm on ebay for £87 and its in another class in terms of build quality. Having the extra 20mm and 3.5-4.5 instead of 3.5-5.6 is great. Very sharp, decent bokeh, it's a real winner. Regularly selling on ebay for about £100
But you could always go for the 50mm as said above ;)

P.S. Jessops told me that I bought the last avialable one, a few weeks back now.

All credit to them, they shipped it from another store for colelctino at my local store and when the first one was found to be faulty automatically tacked down another one !!! I had requested that i needed it before a certain day and it arrived on time.

In the end my camera body was Knacked and had to be set off to Nikon for repair, so I didn't get to use it straight away.

A significant difference is that the 18-70mm has a metal mount not plastic so it is more robust than the 18-55mm. If you can get one buy it, but I always wonder if the 18-105 VR is a better walkabout lens and not quite a pricy as the 18-200mm!

Hi Will....

At that price you would be crackers not to get the 18-70mm!
It's a very well made lens, way better than the 18-55. Feels solid on the body with a metal mount. Has internal focussing so using a cpl is no problem either. Excellent IQ and is reasonably fast at f/3.5 max aperture. Mine is a semi permanent fixture on the camera.....

Thanks all for advice.. have been searching high and low on ebay and seem to find some at low prices with days if not hours left. As I say tomorrow I will sell up the kit lens and see if I can find a bargain :)

Just another vote for the 18-70 here, I upgraded from an 18-55 and it was an excellent move.

i use either the 18-70 or my 50mm for pretty much everything.
the 18-70 is a very good walkabout lens that should cover most bases

Another vote for the 18-70, great walk about, I also use mine for very close up work, then crop in tight, it can be so sharp:thumbs:

Check out MPB who advertise on here, they have a fair number of used Nikkors, good company to deal with

I upgraded to the 18-70 from the non-VR 18-55 and you could tell the difference. I've since moved from the 18-70 to the Sigma 18-50 2.8 which is again a nice jump.

This is a reassuring thread as I've just bought a camera that comes with an 18-70mm lens so it's great to know it's a good'un.

After advice from all on here put in my order via eBay. Managed to find one in mint condition with just a small crack on the lens hood for £70 which didn't seem too bad. Just listing my 18-55 VR now and a few other bits and pieces to make it back up :)
