Yes
I have just won one of these on a well known auction site.
12 months old, hardly used and got it for a good price (about £150 less than I expected!) so I thought it was worth a punt.
Is it a good lens, anyone got any experience with it.
I got it because I love my other two primes 300mm F4, and 50mm f1.8. and I hope it sort of fills the gap.

They are a bit peachey to say the least! I like mine and what it does

A superb lens

I bought mine when my 70-200VR developed a fault - and I now prefer it....

Fantastic Bokh - and no fall off in the corners on my D3

This is the sharpes lens i have ever used.
the only problem i found was the rear element is set high inside the lens and this was a dust trap.
If buying new no probs if used be careful.

How much did you pay?
The going rate seems to be about £280-380 on ebay completed listings.

I was lucky enough to get mine for £150 from a shop. Have to admit that it doesn't get much use these days since I also have a 70-200 f/2.8 which takes up less room in the bag so tends to get taken out leaving the 180 in the cupboard.

How does your 70-200 take up less room than a 180mm:shrug:
70-200 3.4x8.5 in. (Diameter x Length)
180mm 3.1x5.7 in. (Diameter x Length)

The lens is 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF.
new the cheapest is about £620
used through Grays of Westminster they are about £525.
The one I got was £300 at only 12 months old and claims to be virtually unused (thats why it is being sold)
From what you guys say its not as much of a bargain as I thought but I think its a cracker.

There is on on ebay ending in 15 minutes on £310..
But as long are you are happy with the lens and the price you paid, thats all that matters!

Just measured my 70-200 (it's a Sigma one not a Nikkor) and it's 100mm wide (across the widest part of the hood x 200mm long (at 70mm). Can't lay my paws on the 180mm at the moment but I'm sure it was longer when I had them stood side by side a while ago. The 70-200 also has the extra versatility a zoom gives with little sacrifice in IQ and none in speed.

I like primes and survived for many years with only primes and no real telephotos (IIRC, 135mm was my longest back then) but now zooms are catching up in terms of IQ and way outstrip primes for convenience (footzoom isn't always an option and there's a limit as to how many primes one can carry (or afford!)), I'll settle for carrying 3 lenses to cover all lengths from 12-200mm (or 300 if I take the 70-300 VR rather than the 70-200. The only downside to that is the loss of speed but the D700's high ISO performance combined with the VR negates the main downside and only really sacrifices the differential focus possible with large apertures.

sorry to ressurect this but I just want to gloat
Got the lens today and it is absolutely mint
complete with all original packaging, even the plastic bag with Nikon printed on it.
Looks like it has never been used, In fact the inside of the leather case has "nikon" imprinted in the soft lining from the end cap as it has clearly not been taken out of the case for a very long time. Apparently it is only 10 months old as well.
Tried it inside with flash and its great. Cant wait for daylight to give it a real go.
