Yes
Ok so I'm struggling on which lens to get first. I like doing sports and my only other 2 lenses I have are 50mm 1.4 and 75-300 4-5.6

Want to do sports and portraits. Which are two completely different things right!
I'm off to Leeds Skatepark Thursday so will be only using the 2 lenses I have. I like doing skateboarding photography and I can get pretty close to the action at Leeds.

I will eventually get 14-24 24-70 and 70-200 but it's just a decision between 24-70 and 70-200 right now.

By the way I'm more convinced on the 24-70... Mainly because of the £500 price gap and don't have that right now.
If you think I should get the 70-200 give me some good reasons why.

I'm assuming you've been using the 50mm and going in close, if that's the case then the 24-70 or to throw a spanner in the works there's always the 24-120 F4..

if however your ending up using the 75-300, common sense says get the 70-200

After seeing the horrible effect of floating apertures I doubt I'll be getting anything of such. The 24-120 doesn't appeal to me as I want to get the three lenses as in first post.

I don't mind getting in close but I got used to using cropped sensors and now I have full frame so I have to get even closer. The 50mm won't cut it when I go on Thursdays skateboard shoot so I'll probably be using the 75-300
It's not a bad lens, but it's annoying and could always be better.
It doesn't help being that the 24-70 is named the sharpest zoom lens available to date.
Still not sure what to get, though starting to wander towards the 70-200

Find out which effective focal length you use most and go for that. The 75-300 on a crop will be waaaay longer than the 70-200 on full frame (the 75-300 will have the same field of view as a 120-480 would be on a full frame). If you do most of your togging at the longer lengths, a 70-200 isn't going to cut it... On the other hand, if you do a lot at, say, 75mm on the crop sensor, that's going to fit nicely on the 70-200 range on full frame...

Exposure Plot (http://www.cpr.demon.nl/prog_plotf.html) will allow you to see what the exif of your JPEGs say you shoot.

I'm not using Canon?
Crop factor for Nikon is 1.5

I'm still not even 100% sure
I may even buy them both but Sigma versions... Wow im so confused lol
I was hoping that I could decide before the event tommorow so Jessops could deliver it before i go...

OK - the 75-300 goes from 112.5-450 then, which is nearly 120-480  The point I was making was that if you are out of the 200mm on FF range as you take a lot of your photos at 300mm on crop, neither lens is going to cut it for you.

Just look at the effective focal lengths of the sorts of photos you have taken and want to match on FF and use that to guide your purchase choices.

I should have no problem at 200mm

That photo was taken with the 75-300 not even maxed out at 300 on my FF camera.

Going to be ordering the 24-70 anyway just because its cheaper and I have some family shoots coming up soon for christmas and halloween

Even though the 24-70 isn't even in stock >.<

Hopefully i'll be ok with the 50mm tommorow.

Adam, surely if you were happy using the 50mm on a crop Nikon, then that have an effective reach of 75mm. So the 24-70 will be shorter that you are used to using??

To answer you quandary, use your 75-300 and see if that works - this should lead you to the correct choice for the sports shots.

That said, I find the 24-70 I have great for indoor party shots - if that's what you intend for Xmas and Halloween??

I would suggest the 70-200, but if money is tight, perhaps the earlier Nikon vrI - yes, there are 'some' issues with the vignetting on full frame, but in reality its minimal [I say that from working with someone that is using the combo professionally and not having any issues] and is still a bloody fantastic lens. You can use that length for portrait stuff, especially on full frame, I do so at weddings all the time, keeping my sigma 24-70 only for wider short length shots [though will be replacing that with nikon version soon as cash allows] - you will be amazed at how little distance you need with this lens on FX sensors. The flip side of course is that you lose length for the sports stuff, but you can always add a nikon 1.4 or 1.7 TC if you need to.

Just an idea for you to mull over.... ;)

Adam, where are you in W.Yorks? I work in Heckmondwike, and you are more than welcome to pop by and have play with the 24-70 (Sigma 2.8 HSM) for a bit, to see what you think. Granted, it's not a Nikon, but would give you some idea of the range.

Keighley.

Seems like im not going to be getting any lens any time soon... Just got refused credit  Surprising since I have a reasonable amount of cash left over every week...
Might sell my house and move somewhere smaller... Then get all the lenses I need plus a D3 lol

Oh dear I'm upset now...
Anyone have a 24-70 going for £800? lol Just joking... nobody sells them that cheap =(

The OP has full frame and not crop, just wondered why everyone is on about focal lengths with cropped sensors ;)

I'd go for the 24-70 myself if you're happy with the 75-300 for now

Edit: Doh, bad news Adam

I have the 24-70 and it really is a fantastic lens, worth its price any day, but I mainly shoot portraits. It is on the body most of the time, I just love it. You already have the 50mm, just use your legs a little more when you are not doing sports.

I live close to Brands Hatch/ Lydden Hill so want to start shooting motorsport again. I intend to purchase the 70-200 VR or VRII soon for that reason and to get great candid shots of the kids. I still have a couple of DX bodies.

Both lenses are fantastic, you just need to weigh up what focal range will work best for your needs. You will not go wrong.

I'd go for the 70-200 myself, it's a great lens on a D700, I wouldn't get hung up on the vignetting stuff about the Mk1 either to be fair, firstly it's not really an issue in the real world and secondly it'll probably fall outside of what you see in your viewfinder anyway on a D700 so you'd likely crop it slightly anyway.

Hard choice really.

For skating you'll find the 24-70 is the best (I've shot some skating with my 70-200 and you run out of space all the time) but on the other hand for other sports (eg motorsport) the 70-200 is obviously far better (but I have used my more recent 24-70 for that too!).

You wanna buy Jasons 28-70 The Beast. Those tropical White copies really hold there value. And of course The Beast is a legendary fabulous lens.

I think I would go for the 70-20, especialy as your using full frame. Its just a fantastic lens, I have the Vr1 version which is just superb although can be a little tight on my D300 but great on a D700!

It's the old 28-70
Looks nice but I'll probably slit my wrists if I'm 4mm short in the studio lol
