That sounds a lot of money, other considerations for less money :-
35-70 f2.8D £300 used sharp lens, constant f2.8
28-105 f3.5-f4.5D £150 used , good little known gem for a walkabout lens.
The 24-85 always had mixed reviews, but I always thought it a nice lens, but not at that price.

One of the best value walkabouts on the D700 has got to be the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 (body driven version)
