Nikon 35mm AF-S f/1.8 or f/2.0 D?

Yes
So, has anyone used both of these? If so, which ones the 'better' I use a D80 mainly, use my D40x only for the 55-200mm AF-S because I can have telephoto on one and others on the other, so it's not that I *need* the AF-S.

So, any thoughts?

Mulled this over recently and resolved to buy the f/2 as the f/1.8 is a DX lens. My next body will be full frame so the cheaper but faster (and highly rated) 1.8 is not sensible in this instance

Yes, you see I would very much like to go full frame - not any time soon cos any money I do save up doesn't last long cos of lens lust :P
Do you have any examples from the lens, if you don't mind?

Hi Shorty, I was in a similar position to you and decided to go with the DX version. It is an excellent lens for the price (think it is about £170 brand new now). My thinking was that it wasn't a massive DX investment compared to what some lenses cost and if I went full-frame I would just sell it on/trade it in...

A couple of shots:

I found the out of focus rendering on the 35/1.8 a bit busy, but every other aspect of the lens (apart from being DX) is hard to fault. I've read of people waxing lyrical over the 35/2, so I'd be tempted to try that one...though I know it's not a focal length that's very useful to me.

Gawd this lens is lush, so sharp! Isn't it. Klopek, is that first pic wide open? What Aperture?

Mud - what do you mean by the focus rendering?

Klopak is right, it isn't a huge spend on a lens at all, I have a couple of expensive lenses and I made sure they were non DX, however all my others are easy to change.

I always thought the lower end of stuff would not suit me, or my 'style' HOWEVER, I am just in love with it, even for action shots of dogs, I am really almost not at all using my 55-200, and the 24-70 never leaves the camera unless I do wanna just try out the 85mm in some situs.

But I've heard, and can seee great things about this lens, it really is pin sharp - isn't it!

Right, I shall have a ponder, me thinks!

Yes, that first one is 1/100 at 1.8.

As long as you get the focus right it is sharp wide open and the colour is nice and contrasty. It is prone to a bit of CA wide open but I guess you can't have everything! :)

Bokeh basically...do the out of focus areas look smooth or are harsh details/lines retained? The 35/1.8 is not bad in this regard (similar to the 50/1.4D in my experience), but I mention it because the 35/2D sometimes gets mentioned with regards to its smooth bokeh. This doesn't bother everybody...so decide if it bothers you I guess! :cuckoo:

My bad, my post wasn't clear but I haven't got it yet - just made the decision to opt for the 2 in future rather than the cheaper 1.8 sooner. Money burns a hole straight through my pocket.

FWIW I read (in a recent thread on here I think) a couple of people mentioning that having a 35 and 85 prime has led to them barely using their 50mm. You might fund the difference by selling your nifty :naughty:

Thanks for your replies guys.
Bokeh, hmmmmm, now that's a toughie, something so small yet something that *can* make all the difference - will ponder on all these facts [won't be getting anything for a few weeks, if I do at all]

AWN - ah OK, I mis-read you.
And, I'm not amazingly keen on my 85 :( I'm trying to love it but for a crop camera AND it's rubbish focusing difference it's taking me a while to like it but I'm adement I will!

But that said, the nifty hasn't been on my camera for a long while, but I don't want rid cos I will use it for shoots[like the next couple of weeks while I'm working they've enquired about a shoot[are friends] as have seen some of my shots - so it will be used no doubt :)] But wise idea! This week will prove it really I spose!

AWN - Unfortunatley I'm going to have to learn to like it, as it was bought from inheritance money and the condition I be able to use it on lenses is that I will be keeping those lenses forever[hence them not being DX, too]
I think, especially once I'm on FF it'll be easier cos it's obviously not gonna be so long as on this crop body!

Got some on Flickr, I have EXIF enabled. The recent parrot shot in my stream was with my 85 :) and a couple of the Springer shots a couple pages back[the one where the focus is off :P] And erm a couple more, but I've only used it 3times atm.
