nikon 400 2.8 af-s

anyone had/used the old af-s 400mm and can shed some light on its speed/quality etc

I rented the 400mm f/2.8 AF-S (mark 1 version made 1998-2001) from Lensesforhire couple of weeks ago and it was great. Extremely fast and accurate AF on my D3 (not used a mark 2 or VR copy of it for comparison but as fast as the latest 300mm 2.8 VRII). Colours and contrast great, bokeh great, extremely sharp as you would expect. Nikon 400 2.8's are always going to be brilliant. I'd have thought the latest ones are a little quicker but then they cos a fortune. I'd say the mark 1 AF-S would be hard to fault if you find a copy in good condition. That may be where you're problems lie with such an old pro workhorse lens?!

I know a few people who shoot sports with this lens and it does just fine for them.
