Nikon 50mm f1.4 or 35mm f1.8?

I'm gonna get my other half a lens for Christmas, but not sure which would be better. I know she wants to do more portrait photography but would probably use the lens for other genres, so which would people recommend I should buy her?
Also open for other suggestions as 50mm is stretching the budget a bit.

PS. she has a D5000 so the lens would need to be AFS/HSM,etc if you give other options

I love my 50mm. Great IQ and although I dont shoot wide open much, is nice to have the option if light is bad. Depends really on the space she has to work in? If individual or couples, then 50mm. If 4+ adults especially if room is tight then 35mm. Hard to really say!
