Nikon 50mm f1.4D v 35mm f2D

With the arrival of the first-born imminent I am looking for a suitable lens for my D5000 for the hours of fun... My inclination is to go for the 50mm f1.4 but does the 35mm f2 offer any obvious advantages? Also will both autofocus on my camera?
Lastly has anyone used mpb photographic for second hand stuff? They seem to have reasonable prices looking at the website.

Neither will AF on the D5000. You'd need either the 50mm AF-S 1.4G or the 35mm AF-S 1.8G, around £300 and £160 new respectively. 35mm is arguably more versatile for a cropped sensor. I've had both and both are excellent lenses. A point to note is that the 35mm 1.8 is a DX lens only suitable for crop sensor whereas the 50 1.4G is suitable for FX full frame.
