Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR1 Questions

Hi guys, just bought the VR1 version of the Nikon 70-200 second hand and wanted to ask a few questions of owners just to make sure it's functioning as designed.

When holding the shutter button down half way to keep focus on a subject (in AF-C mode really) what I presume is the VR system makes a constant noise while half depressed, sounding like what I can only describe as like when you used to get interference when tuning in an analogue TV.

Also, I think this is functioning correctly but no harm in asking. After pressing the shutter to take a picture, the focus point in the viewfinder 'drifts' either up/down or left/right. I am presuming this is normal and is the VR settling back to it's original 'non'VR position?
 
It should make a single click then a whirring, humming noise with your ear against the barrel. The AF point does drift a little.

I don't have to put my ear against the barrel... it's quite audible just looking through the viewfinder.

I'd like to try a new one on my camera just to compare as I didn't think a £900+ lens would be quite so noisy... certainly not going to be going covert with it :D

Cheers Gary, just need to upgrade my rucksack now... need one to hold a D7000, Tamron 17-50, Nikon 85mm, SB600, Nikon 70-200 and lens hoods and filters. Anyone got any suggestions... I doubt I'll have anymore than that at any one time so don't want something massive.

Hmmm, that's a bit out of my price range after buying the 70-200 :) Might look for one 2nd hand. Was hoping to spend a max of around £75 really (and that's pushing the finances at the moment!)

Is there any soft holders available just for the 70-200 size lens?
 
I got a kata r103 it's not small but it passes for hand luggage on flights.
It currently holds
D7100
Sigma 150-500
Sigma 70-200 2.8
18-105
50mm
Flash
Spare batteries cards etc etc.
Very comfortable with all that in whilst walking. Mine came with a waterproof cover with it that does work.
I got it off here for £50 iirc

Hmmm, one of those on MPB for £39 but only comes with internal dividers, no waterproof bit I presume...
 
You should look at bags as another piece of equipment, a protective one at that. If you spend a lot of money on lenses, then you should get a decent bag to keep it all as secure as possible. I used to buy cheap bags, but after one fell apart while I was out shooting, never again. The stitching, for example, is never anywhere as strong.

As for the VR noise - perfectly normal. Some lenses have it noisier than others. My VRII was noisey too, where my Sigma 150 OS is not near as loud, you can still hear it in action though.

I would spend more on a bag if I had the money... I have a slingshot 102 at the moment so do like how they work, but also like the look of the Kata mentioned above. £39 second hand without a raincover doesn't sound too bad to get me a bag that will at least hold all of my equipment, rather than the dining room table in cardboard boxes which is where bits reside at the moment :D
 
Oh yeah, should have been clearer here, I didn't mean the bags linked, I mean no-name makes. They often turn out to be a bit ... well, crappy. Lowepro bags wouldn't let you down. I've had a few, including the sling shot [100 think mine was] I bought that second hand at the time, it was in perfect condition. Buying from a photographer you will usually find their gear to be in great nick. Unless it's a wildlife, mountain climbing, winter sports shooter - might be some gunk on there :D
 
My 70-200 f2.8 VR1 does pretty much the same thing when VR is on. Not as loud as you describe but certainly you can hear or sense VR is turn on.

Yeh, I guess it's one of those things that's subjective and also, many people using them for a while will probably get used to any noise and be less sensitive to it.
