I'm tempted to get one of these (if I can scrape teh funds together) and just wanted your views on it.

From what I've read it is a pretty mean contender with the current Nikkor, as it uses the same optical configuration if I understnad that correctly, just the AF is very very slow. Now I have the 5000 (Obviously won't AF on that) and the D200, and wondered if anyone has any experience with AF on it. Is it really that slow? Is it similar to the AF of the current cheap sigma/tamron/ 70-300s? And finally, what would be a good price for one?

I haven't used the older push-pull version, but I did have the later two ring one and as the af in both is reliant on the motor in the body, it is that which is the limiting factor when it comes to how fast it will be.

On a D200 mine was certainly fast enough for general use, put it on an older, consumer body like the D70 though and it was much slower, down purely to the weaker motor in the lower end body.

What are they worth? I dunno a guess would be £300-350 for a nice one, but remember any of these will be a fair old age, so a wee bit of dust inside is probably a given, especially with the push-pull zoom, which will act like a vacuum pump!
 
The push-pull is slooooow on a D200, you can minimize its effect using the limiter but on the whole it is half as fast as a 2 ring.
That does not detract from what is spectacliar glass, for anything static it is beautiful, for sports...jump jets.....steeple chases your gonna have to use some ingenuity.
I use one on my F3, it fablious, and being an F3 has no AF anyway..:)
 
I've been thinking about why (apart from its optical quality) I like this lens.

It is because I shoot far more F3 film than D200 digital, I see it as a fast sharp bulletproof 80-200 zoom, with the bonus that it will actually AF on a D200 should I wish it..
 
Thanks for that. Certainly got me wanting one, as its likely to be the only 2.8 glass I'll be able to just about afford! I take it then, that on a D200, the AF will be slower than on, say, the Tamron 70-300 DI LD? I give that as an example as I used to have one and everyone said how rubbish the AF was but I always found it fine...
 
I've just bought one. I've only tested it in poor quality light, but the optics appear great. I'm using it on a D700 and it is slow to autofocus but if you know that you can work around it.

Oh and it is BIG AND HEAVY.

Great lens and great value for money.
 
Two-ring is fantastic. AF on my D2x is superb, although it does hunt now and then in low-contrast situations (maybe also to do with the body). Limiter is useful, build is amazing. Wude open it's good; f/4 is awesome. Doesn't like shooting into direct light but other than that, it's amazingly good for half the price of the 70-200.
 
I have one of these and they are a great lens. Grays of Westminster list 4 of these at the moment ranging from £250 for the AF to £425 for the AFD model.
