I have Nikon 70-300 and although happy using it with D300, will be owner to a shiny used D700 soon.
Was wondering about 80-200 to be a better lens for my D300 (second body) or even with D700, as I have read very good things about AF-D version.

Any suggestions welcome before take a dive on eBay for bidding:D
 
80-200 is an excellent lens, I think IQ wise not far short of the 70-200 VRll, though lacking its other features. I wouldn't chose the push/pull early one but the two-ring version is very good and affordable at around £500-600 - at the top end the af-s version is available generally around the £800 mark.
Economic quality then go for the two-ring 80-200 ... if you really want quality go for the 70-200 VRll :D
 
Thanks, can't find used AF-S version anywhere but few are selling new AF-D and there are two nice examples on Ebay.

Also is it wise to sell 70-300 or keep it to compliment 80-200:(
 
Buy one. It is a magical lens and for the money on a D700 it's stunning.
 
I went from the 70-300 VR to the 80-200 AF-D (2 ring) and the difference in both build and image quality is very noticeable. If I hadn't "needed" the AF-S for motorsport I wouldn't have later changed to the 70-200 VR as I haven't really noticed a huge difference in iq.

IMHO the 80-200 AF-D is a bit of a bargain, especially the old single ring version, if you can find one for £300-350, but as Gramps says the "economy" buy is really the 2 ring one.
 
I paid £750 for mine brand new and it looks like it'll last a gazillion years.

Not much to save on used ones. New one looks tempting..,but where to order from. Not in stock anywhere (UK sites):thinking:
 
Just sold mine as well. As has been said a fine lens and tack sharp. Focussing is pretty quick on the non AFS versions, and it's a well balanced lens.

The only "issue" with them is their built in feature, that they can't focus properly at max focal length at minimum focus distances (Nikon even mention this in their manual), however on the plus side, they don't focus breath anything like as much as the new 70-200 F2.8 VR II.

I bought my D700 from HDEW fantastic service. Don't be put off by them being a grey importer. They have a physical building in surrey that you can visit too.
 
My latest Mifsuds e-mail this evening shows they've got both AF-D and AF-S versions in the secondhand 'bin'. You'll enjoy the AF-D if you go for that...it has a good chunky quality feel to it!

It's where I bought mine. No problems.
 
I sold my two-ring 80-200 AF-D for £550 on here and I've seen similar prices for that lens, which is a bargain IMO. If you end up searching for the AF-S version and you end up paying £800+then you'd be as good off buying a used 70-200 VR1, which you';ll get for £920 or so used in TP classifieds...

Exactly. I can't see hire the af-s can be that much better tbh
