It may be laser engraved on the bottom of the aperture ring (quite faintly).

Serial Number: Laser engraved into bottom of aperture ring. US versions are prefixed with "US" with no space between US and the digits.

That's the 50 1:4 not the 85 1:4. I have had another look and cannot find a serial number on my 85 1:4 :shrug: There must be one somewhere but I can't find it.
Hopefully Kev will shed some light on it when he has a look at his later.
