Just wanting to get a handle from those who actually have one. Good, bad indifferent etc. I had a D, and really liked the focal length, but sold it on to get a 24-120 (which I like, but it`s making me lazy). So I`m thinking about trading it in for the 85mm.

Yeah I know, but as I have 35 art as well, it seems a bit daft IMO to have an 85 and then the 24-120 which covers both ... It was only really bought as a holiday lens.
 
It's a fabulous lens Paulie. Lightweight, sharp, creamy bokeh and mega value for money. I went the 35 and 85 route but I'm a lot happier with my 24-70. For me a prime needs to accompany a zoom. But then again i am very lazy. ;)

Although more expensive, maybe keep your eyes peeled for a Sigma 85mm just to be a little different.
 
The 85mm 1.8G is great value and much better than the D version optically - sharper, less CA, smoother bokeh.

I have looked into the Sigma, but all the reviews seem to think focus can be a bit hit and miss, hence the 85G route. If I had the money, I`d probably keep the lazy lens too ;)

Not three bad, bit bloody busy at the moment, but that's good ;) We must sort out an autumn meet methinks, you can show me how much fun you are having with that new 85mm 1.8G ;) Seriously, just do it, you won't regret it.

Sounds like a plan to me :) ... Argh don`t. I`m tempted, for sure.
 
I have the 35/50/85 f1.8g trio and think all of them are superb!
 
85 g is probably the best value lens on planet earth. If I ever went back to flappy mirror photography it would be the first lens I rebought.
 
As everyone has mentioned, it's a fantastic lens. If you liked the D, you'll more than likely love the G version. It renders out of focus areas more pleasingly than the D - more like the 85 1.4G. Focusing is swift enough and very accurate (D750), and of course near silent, another advantage over the D.
