Nikon AF 80-200mm f2.8 D anyone got one?

Thinking of buying a used Nikon AF 80-200mm f2.8 D, had a quick play outside the shop & was impressed with the sharpness.

The lens is quite heavy & does not come with a tripod mount, so assume I have to mount the camera if I want to use a tripod or monopod,is there any danger of such a heavy lens with no mount ??

Apologies if this seems a basic question, but I'd like to able to use for Landscape & wildlife shots. so may need a tripod

yes their is danger to that. I strongly won't mount the camera on the tripod with that lens because of the weight. The whole point of the tripod collar is to balance the weight of the lens and camera when mounted on the tripod.

When mount the camera on the tripod with the lens attached you will cause lots of weight at the front which can cause major damage.

Is it the push/pull version or the two-ring version? I had the two-ring and it has a tripod collar that is fixed to the barrel, so I take it you're looking at the Mk2 version?

Don't think it comes with a tripod mount, might be a third party mount available, but not sure how it would work with push/pull?

Yep, it's probably the stumbling block of that lens....

well i would ask the guy in the shop if you can mount it on the tripod to see will it work. But like i said the weight on the lens could cause the in-different balance when mounted on the D90 and then mount the D90 to the tripod.

It probably wouldn't, however I always thought that the weight of my 80-200 (2-ring version) felt as if it was going to pull the front off my D80, due no doubt to the camera having a polycarbonate chassis, which allowed for an amount of flex. Mounting the lens on one of the pro or semi-pro bodies, with a metal chassis feels much better....
