Nikon AF-s 24-120 f4 VR arrived today.

Been sat here waiting for this all morning, just arrived and I have taken 2 pics with it in the garden on the D700, cant go out as waiting for a call from the vet.

Build quality not as nice as my 24-70 but better than I expected, feel’s a nice weight balance on the D700, hood feels cheap and is very small, lens case just a pouch.

I brought it as I have a wrist problem and find the 24-70 a bit heavy, I also hope the VR will aid me if the wrist plays up and obviously having the extra 50mm will be a godsend.

I have decided to wait until after Christmas to see if I end up selling the 24-70 in favour of this, I am totally open minded and I could end up if funds allow to keep both as I see them as being used on different occasions.

I am aware that the lens suffers from vignetting however as a 2 second fix is possible in lightroom it does not bother me or stopped me buying in the first place, the thing I notice first when I look at my shots are how sharp they are not if the corner is a little darker than expected I have read a number of reviews and everyone raves about the sharpness, some mention distortion but again an easy fix if I find it necessary.

Snow could be coming later so I hope tomorrow will see me out and about taking a few shots and ill update this thread with my findings as the day’s go by.
 
Have been considering one of these also - along with th 28-300. Did you have one of these also? If so, how did it compare?
 
That sounds like a super lens. One of the main reasons I got a Canon 5D2 was because of the 24-105L, and I've not regretted that for a second - so versatile, it's hardly ever off the camera. 24-120 4 on a D700 sounds even better :thumbs:

I suspect you'll get some vignetting and distortion at the wide end, but it's rarely a problem and so easily fixed. D700 has in-camera vignetting correction I think?

Hi mark,
Yes i had the 28-300 it had to go to allow me the funds to buy the 24-120, to be honest i did not like it, great range but it was very soft and images were not well defined, distant trees came out like blobs of colour rather than detailed trees.
i think if it were around £400 i would say fair enough but at nearly £800 it was not for me.
I hope the 24-129 will be better and it certainly is sharper from just playing around so far.

I think this is the best review i have seen so far and seems to be a good guide as to what to expect.
It also gives reference to the 28-300

Hi Richard,
i too had the 24-105 IS when i was with Canon and loved it, so that was another reason to buy this and see how it compares.

I know it can be got a bit cheaper but a few years ago i had a problem with a Grey import so now i tend to buy from who ever is cheaper out of the UK dealers for peace of mind.
Having used a nikon 70-300 VR i can say i found the images better on that at the long end than on the 28-300.

Interesting that you say that about the 28-300mm. I have read that some samples are soft. I seem to be lucky with mine. No real complaints with it. Good walk about lens.

Yes it does, but only on JPG's. If you shoot RAW then you have to do it yourself unless you are using CaptureNX in which case you also have a handy toggle to do the same as the in camera JPG does.

The 24-70 at 24mm on FX also vignettes btw, so don't feel too hard done by.
