Nikon battery charger

I've noticed something odd about my charger or my battery (I'm not sure which it is), but I've noticed since about July that no matter how long I leave it on charge, the flashing light that changes to a solid light to indicate the battery is fully charged, never stops flashing.

I'm not overly concerned at this point because the battery seems to be performing fine; I get as many shots out of a charge as I ever did, and the battery holds its charge when the camera is unused.

I'm just wondering if it is indicative of an underlying problem with either the battery or the charger. Anyone able to shed any light on this?
 
How old is the battery. What `life` does it show? (0-4)
 
I'll have had it 2 years at the end of this year. When I put it back in the camera, it shows fully charged - although the battery indicator only has 4 levels as you say - so I only know it's at least 75% charged, but could be full for all I know - I can take a lot of shots and it will still show as full.
 
Hi Jon. The 0-4 indicator is for the life of the battery, 0 being new & 4 .....knacked! lol So if it's showing 3, probably best to get another & keep that as a spare.

Sorry I misunderstood. :lol:

Where is this life indicator to be found? Haven't heard of it before.
 
Ha, maybe I've presumed you meant the `life`, when you were referring to the charge. :lol:

When you click on `battery info` & the screen shows % charge at the top, there is a 0-4 indicator at the bottom. (at least there is on my camera. lol Not sure about the 5100)

Try running the battery flat, down to zero% then fully re-charge, to see if it helps maybe.

Just been through all my menus (I think) can't find it. Is it possible the D5100 lacks this feature? Or that I've just not found it?

Through a bit of googling I've discovered the D5100 doesn't have a battery info menu - I don't feel so bad about not finding it now!

Also that I'm not the only one to have the ever-lasting charging light issue.

I'll take your advice and try fully discharging it and see what happens. Thanks Carl. :)
 
A full discharge of Li-ion batteries is generally not recommended... but besides from that, your battery seems to be faulty. Is it a genuine Nikon?

I would replace it. If not with another Nikon, then look at JapCell, Duracell or Hähnel...

Sorry about that Jon, I just presumed they'd all be the same.

Jan is correct about fully discharging not being generally recommended, but if it's on it's way out?
 
Yep it's genuine Nikon; it's the battery that came with the camera.

It doesn't seem to be on the way out - apart from the recharging light, it's performing solidly in my camera.

Been out today, used the camera for a good couple of hours, all shots taken with image review, used liveview a fair bit, and it's still showing full. Experience tells me I can use it a lot before it needs charging again.
