nikon body with sigma lens. why doesnt it fit flush?

i've only just switched to Nikon.
What I dont understand is why the lenses (in this pic a sigma 35mm f1.4 on d600) dont fit flush with the body? they hit that metal tab.
cant be good for weather sealing, and i keep getting dust on the sensor

:thinking: I have had several sigma lenses in the past, none have fitted like that, all have been flush. Not tried that lens though, certainly doesn't look right.... :shrug:

edit: are you sure that is on right, have you done something you shouldn't to that metal tab, which looks ALL wrong... :suspect:
 
just because they both happen to be sitting here, just stuck my sigma 24-70 [not rated to be weather sealed btw] on the D700. It isn't totally flush if you look right round the bottom side/underneath, but not as extreme as the lens you are showing. Oh and the aperture ring shoves that tab round and out of the way, hence it looked wrong to me. Sorry ;)
 
The 35 isn't weather sealed is it? It lacks the rubber gasket the Nikon 35G has. Cagey and a few others have the Sigma 35.

That tab is for old AI (aperture Indexing) lenses, it's what tells the camera where the aperture is set on the lens.

That picture doesn't look particularity wrong to me but my D7000 is with Nikon so I can't check.

Dust may be a known issue with the D600, I did hear new ones need time to bed in a bit and it clears up after 1000 ish frames.

yup, just borrowed another lens and its the same but just has a rubber seal.
so, its the lens. i better ask the postman if i can have a rubber band.
 
Sorry, but I can't see, what should be wrong in your image? It doesn't touch that "tab" and from here it looks perfectly flush??
Can you point out, where the gap/non-flush thing is?
 
That doesn't look right to me Gary. I've had several Sigma lenses and all of them have fitted flush with all my Nikon SLR bodies (film and digital). [grandmasuckeggs]You are lining up the dots and turning the lenses the right way, aren't you?[/grandmasuckeggs]
 
It is sitting flush, it just doesn't have the weather seal. (just checked my D7000, with 17-70 and 10-20 - same)

Same with my Sigma 35mm f1.4 art. As above, it isn't weather sealed
 
As has been stated already, that tab is the aperture index tab so the camera can meter with older Nikkors.

Some pre AI lenses will not fit properly on cameras with the tab.

However, your Sigma lens doesn't appear to be touching it (from your picture).

Does it appear to be mounted correctly, and most important, does it work?

If so, I wouldn't worry about it.
