Nikon Camera upgrade - which one?

I currently have 2 nikon dslr cameras - D40 & D3000 - which are pretty similar plus the following lenses :

nikon 35mm f1.8
nikon 18-55 f3.5-5.6 (kit lens x2)
nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5
Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6

I am looking to upgrade one of my nikon camera bodies to a better spec camera.

Ideally i'd like one which :
- works better in low light situations
- has less grain on higher iso's
- works with sd/sdhc cards
- has a decent sized screen on the back.

Any suggestions for what I could get, dont mind if its second hand for under £750?

Given your budget I'd be looking to replace the D3000 with a D300 or D300s. The D40 handles low light better than the D3000 so I'd keep that one.

However, I would also consider getting rid of the Sigma 70-300 lens as well and going for a used D300 and Nikon 70-300VR lens. You will quickly become disatisfied with the Sigma when you upgrade to a better spec body and the improvement in IQ will blow you away :D
 
thanks for your responses - i think the D300s, although it is a lovely camera is a bit out of my budget, even at the second hand prices, but the D7000 and D90 look more like what i'm after. will have a look online at the reviews to see if the newer d7000 is better than the d90 or not.
bit of a mixed response over which one of the d40 and d3000 i should replace - i havent really noticed much in them with regards to the noise control - so will look into that a bit more too.

thanks for that - the sigma lens was my first purchase after getting my d40 with the kit lens and at the time i was just looking for a cheap zoom lens - so might have look out for a nikon one to upgrade to. ive been eyeing up the nikon 70-200mm f2.8 as my canon photographer people say its their favourite lens but i might invest in one one day when ive made some more money!
 
D7000 is definitely better than the D90 at higher ISO's....I think you can probably get a D300s within your budget too.

Broadly the D7000 has a superior sensor and is better as high ISO's than the D300s but the D300s has a better quality body (though the D7000 is still better than the D90) and better AF. Oh and the D300s has a better buffer than the D7000 which is the achilles heal of the D7000 if you're doing a lot of action/sports.
 
Do you actually need two bodies? You could sell both and get a D7000 or D300s.. If you do need two, I'd probably shift the D40 and get a D90 or D300.

i would need them both as i have recently got more into doing wedding photography now and realised I struggle a bit with low light stuff with the cameras i have, so I need two cameras for that. I will sell either the d40 or d3000 which i can then use the money towards buying a better spec camera.
