Nikon D3 or D700

I own D700 but have used my buddies D3 extensively. Prefer the ergonomics of D3. Nothing in it in terms of performance for me, my D700 is gripped with ENEL4 battery. If I had to decide today I'd get a new D700 over a D3 for the warranty. Used it'd be the D3 every time. I shoot mainly equestrian if it helps.

I have both. Image quality is identical, the D3 can shoot more frames per second, which may or may not be important to you, and can also take a backup memory card.
They are both superb.

I like the flexibility of grip on/off and Sensor cleaning of the D700, but the ergonomics and dual card slots of the D3 are better. To me the difference in FPS is a non-issue.

IQ is the same, so you really need to make your own decision off the specs because you know how/what you shoot.

I heard the focusing system on the D3 is faster, although perhaps just marginally?

As above really... but also the D3 has no popup flash so if you require CLS then you need a flash or SU800 etc, not an issue for most but worth noting. As is the more robust shutter of the D3. It's been discussed not too long ago which a search should find ok.

I love my D700 but if somebody offered me a straight swap for a D3 I'd go for it. Both have their advantages but I just love the gripped bodies.

Thanks for all your replys,it has helped :)

The big thing i need from a camera is it has to be robust, the sort i can take out in all wethers, with good high ISO.

In a way i think i have alway wanted a D3,but couldnt quite adforded a new one,but now their a few s/h ones about, been thinking about more :)

Not worried about Video or build in flash.

I wouldn't touch a second hand D3, they are rubbish. Go for a new D700 instead, they are much better and stronger and sexier and built to last, the D3 will fall apart and you'll be hugely disappointed with it.
