Nikon D300 Tethered to PC

Hello TP,

I'm after some helping regarding tethereing a Nikon D300 to a PC for a hot-set studio in 10 days time (been rather thrown in at the deep end... dont ask!)

So I need to connect the D300 to a PC so that the images can be seen immediately and printed 6"x4". What cable would I need and what program is best? We currently use Faststone for image viewing.

Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated.

A USB cable is all you need for the connection. Obviously for the length you need. Off the top of my head 5M is the longest without some kind of boost.

This software should let shoot tethered. As for printing out, it would be a manual thing once in the computer.


There should be a lot more information about tethering if you do a search. :)

Using LR might also assist with the printing as you can go straight from the library to print without needing any other software.

As has been said previously, 5m is about the max length of cable that you can get away with. Mine works fine at 5m but the computer doesn't even know it's there if I add another 1m length of cable. Just wish EyeFi did a CF card version ...
 
Just a quick bump. Is it possible to use Picasa as the image viewer, with the tethered camera?

I've had a hunt around and not come up with anything concrete.

Does lightroom pick up eyefi cards?
 
I used an EyeFi card when I had my D90. You have to set up a peer-to-peer network with the laptop and then it works okay.

I'm looking for a CF>SD adaptor that fits into the D300 so I can go back to using the EyeFi - everything I've found so far makes the card foul the door :-(

There WAS one but you can't get it any more. There are lots of adapters for the micro SD cards to fit the D300 but I found that if you shoot more than one shot every 1-2 seconds it falls over with memory errors. They don't appear that reliable.
 
This post by Jamez on the eye-fi cards forum Here seems to show how to convert a particular cf11 adaptor to type 1 to enable the card to work in Nikon cameras. (Post near bottom of page.)

That is using a D3 though which has a CF card slot.

The micro SD and SD cards are pin compatible. Had I got the micro SD adapter to work I was going to disassemble it and wire a ribbon cable to the connections and attach a standard SD card slot to the other end and see if I could get it to work. With it not working with the micro SD card reliably I didn't bother taking it further.

Sorry if I misunderstood, Bristolian is looking for a cf/sd card adapter to use an eye-fi card in a D300, and the vimeo clip seems to show how to convert an SD card to CF11 adapter to the dimensions of a CF1 card, which should do the trick.

Yes, you are right, it is the D3s with both types of slot. Just had a look at the video. This might well work.
 
Cheeky little bump.

So there is no definitive WiFi CF card for a D300?

I've used the CF card to micro SD adapter in a D300 and it worked VERY poorly. The problem with the D300 is that it uses TYPE 1 CF cards rather than TYPE 2. TYPE 1 is the normal size that memory cards are whilst CF 2 cards are allowed to be a little thicker. That extra width allows a CF card adapter to take a normal sized SD card. There are a number of videos and explanations saying how to remove the casing from one of these CF2 adapters making it a little thinner and so allowing you to just get it into a CF1 slot!

If you DO get it working then the model number of the adapter would be nice :)

Hmm.. not game for ripping open CF cards. Think I'll stick with the USB cable to the next event.
