Nikon D300 / WU-1B wireless adapter

I've been trying to find out if the WU-1B is compatible with my Nikon D300 bodies but I've not been able to find a definite answer. Even Nikon's own site is vague on the matter so I thought I'd try asking here. The aim is to use the dslr dashboard app on my Android phone as a wireless remote control but I don't want to shell out £50 on the thing only to find it doesn't work and then have the hassle of selling it again. The 'wireless transmitter' option is showing on my menu but it's non-functioning and I'm not sure whether this means it's not available at all or only once the body detects a plugged in unit.

So, can anyone give me a definite answer ... yes or no?

I have the WU 1A which I use on a D3200, this is compatible as listed. The dongle also physically fits my D7000 but will not work with it when tested, the D7000 is not on the Nikon supported list. A firmware update would probably fix this but Nikon's track record of adding useful functionality to older cameras is not good. The D300 or D300S do not appear on the list of supported cameras for the WU1B, I think it very unlikely it would work without some skilful hacking. A work around would be to connect the camera by USB cable to a TP Link MR3040 battery powered wireless router, which would need the firmware changed to meet this purpose, there is guidance on the web to do this. The Android device then connects to the router to enable full remote control. This arrangement is obviously not as convenient as having a small tiny dongle that actually works.

The WU1A and WU1B are believed to be functionally identical, only the connection plug differs.

Thanks Harvey. It was only a bit of a whim anyway and I'm not altogether keen on going to even more expense by buying that router as well so I think I'll abandon the idea and stick with my remote cable release. Thanks anyway for the reply.
