Page 106 of the D3000 manual says you'll have to use the Nikon Transfer software if you really want to plug the camera into your Mac. I've seen notes elsewhere that the D3000 doesn't support USB Mass Storage Mode, which other apps like iPhoto will use. i.e. the camera won't just turn up on the Desktop.
TBH, though, I'd just pop the card into the MBP. That's why Apple have put an SD Card reader on the more recent models.
Otherwise, if you're totally sold on using a USB cable for some reason (perhaps you have a phobia of small slots in Aluminium or something) and don't want to use Nikon's software, I suggest you buy a USB card reader.
What software are you using? iPhoto is supposed to handle cameras in that mode BUT it may not handle it's RAW files yet. Just try taking some JPEGs and see it that works. If it does then it will only be a matter of time before Apple issue and update. Surprised they haven't already as it is not exactly new.
We have no problem downloading from our d3000 to our imac by usb into iphoto or bridge but, then again it all works so much better with a £400 Tosh lappy!!
