Nikon D3100 v Canon 550D Which has best high ISO?

I have read a fair few reviews, but none of them really address this issue fully, so I was wondering what owners thoughts were.
My other half has jumped ship to Nikon, so in a lot of ways it would be sensible for me to do so as well, and having handled both cameras, I do like the handling of the D3100 a lot.
On paper the Canon would seem a better buy for a lot of other reasons, but I would like to know what sorts of images are produced at various higher ISO settings, by "real" people!

I don't think it's a very good idea to base your buying decision on a detail like this, to be honest. There are surely other factors (e.g. the price/availability of lenses which will do the job you want to do) which would make a bigger difference.
 
Thank you for the advice Stewart. I appreciate what you're saying, but for various reasons, I am limited to which lenses I can use, based on weight.
So for my personal circumstances I would be interested to know what owners think. It won't be my only consideration, but it will be one of them! :)
