Nikon d5000 lenses

Hi all

my mate's wife just bought him a d5000 to replace his broken old D70. Great camera, great pics, but only one problem, his nikkor 70-300mm fits the camera but doesnt autofocus.

With me being an Olympus freak, can any of you guys advise me on what lenses in a the cheaper range are available to my mate ?

Thanks in advance

Effjay

for AF anything from Nikon with "AF-S" in the name

"HSM" from Sigma

The D5000 does not have an AF motor built into the body as the D70 had so if he wants AF then he will need to get lens with a built in motor. That will be either AF-S for Nikon or HSM for Sigma. Tamron and Tokina both do a few but ten to be labelled "built in motor".

Try this list from Nikonians for advice as to what will fit and work i what modes - http://www.nikonians.org/nikon/slr-lens.html

Hope this helps

Do all Nikon Lens fit the D5000?

Doesn't bother me if they are AF or MF :)
All Nikon SLR lenses will fit even though they may not even work the light meter, they'll lock into the bayonet.

(There are some real old Fisheyes that need mirror lock-up and the D5000 does not have that - but you are unlikely to come across them)

Just Af? What's afs etc?
And what about mf lenses?
Do you want to use the camera light meter? (I expect that your answer has to be 'yes'.)

For auto focus you can only use lenses marked AF-S, AF-I, or G (with or without VR).

Older AF and AF-D marked lenses will meter but not auto focus.

The rest (other than some really old fisheyes) fit but will not meter. As far as I know no manual focus lens will meter on the D5000 at all.

Asking if lenses fit is not the same as asking if they will work properly....

I have just ordered a Nikon D5000, because it has 19 modes and amongst other things has a quiet shutter button. I use mostly AF, so with reading this thread it seems that I have to be careful which lens I buy, no old just the new ones with the correct letters after the size of the lens. I am looking forward to getting it but a bit nervous as well but at least there is a cooling off period. All in all it looks a very good camera in the magazines, the lens other than in the bundle will be the Sigma 150-500mm that I will buy in a while.
Very interesting thread indeed.

Thanks for the above information now I know exactly what to buy and what not to.
