Has anyone had this problem? I cover a few horse events and at the last two half way through the day the camera seems to have a temporary hissy fit! For no apparent reason it starts to freeze when I review images on the screen, i.e won’t progress forward or backwards and sometimes refuses to come out of viewing mode unless I switch the camera off. It then seems to be okay for a while then completely freezes and refuses to take any shots, shutter release wont’ work, won’t even attempt to focus. I get an r13 error coming up on the top screen when I attempt to press the shutter release, which when I’ve looked up on the internet apparently indicates a buffer overload? Although I’ve noticed that even when everything is working normally if I half press shutter release I get this message. The only thing that seems to clear it is to switch off and remove the lens and then reattach so could this be a contacts issue?

I’ve also noticed that when uploading and viewing the photos in Bridge that some of the thumbnails just stay as the jpeg logo rather than showing a proper thumbnail, although if you open through CS2 the images are absolutely fine. You can also view the thumbnails with no problem in Windows File Manager (thumbnail or filmstrip view).

I’m using Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 Version 1. I can’t say whether the problem occurs with any other lens as for events I only use this one.

I’m wondering whether it needs to go for a service ?
 
I'm not sure what the issue is but r13 isn't an error message as such but an indicator of shots remaining before you fill the buffer - thats why you see it on a half shutter press.

I think if it was a lens/body contact issue you'd get an f00 displayed on the body, indicating the camera is unable to communicate the lens

Sorry this isn't more help, but the only other thing I wonder is if there is a card issue - can you try a different one

I'm sure that r13 is a buffer error. Out of interest what card are you using and have you tried swapping cards? It sounds like it is struggling to write the buffer contents to the card. Are you using CL and CH shutter release modes which would of course throw more at the buffer/card too, compounding it. Have you formatted your card(s) lately, that's worth a try first.

I've got about 15 different cards that I rotate through events (I generally use about 6 a day as I use a different one for each class) and 5 different batteries that are rotated and all get used at different times.

Thanks for explaining about r13 message, I wasn't sure whether it was an error or something else, I think it may be a call to Nikon:'(

This can happen if you accidentally touch the preview/function buttons with your finger while operating the multi selector with your thumb (to review images).
 
Switching off on its own does not cure the problem? You definitely need to remove and re-attach the lens to clear it?

If so, I had similar on mine - cleaning the contacts on the lens and camera seemed to do the trick perfectly - has not happened since.

Yes that's correct switch off doesn't work (this is for shutter freezing) and only when I remove and re-attach the lens does the problem seem to clear.

This is why I thought it might be a contact issue rather than card issue.

OKay so now the numpty question - how do I clean the contacts? Literally just wipe with some form of cleaning fluid?

Oh and thank you for having had the same problem :o)
 
A small ammount of isopropryl alcohol on a cotton bud might do the trick. To clean the contacts.
