Nikon D7000, body only or with kit lens

Hello

If I was to buy the Nikon D7000 what is the best way?
Body only and then chose my own lens or buy it with the 18-105mm VR kit lens?
I would want some type of lens in the range of the 18-105mm VR but I have read mixed reviews of that particular lens.
Also what zoom up to 300mm would best suited (maybe £300 for this lens would be my budget).
I am moving over from a Canon 7D so don't have any experience of Nikon gear.

Can't comment on the body as I have a d90. But have the 18-105 vr in my kit. I have had no issues with this lens vr is good sharp images fairly fast focus.
The only thing I noticed about your swap from canon wouldnt the d7000 be a step back coming from a 7d ?
 
I'm hoping not, the Nikon has much better noise control at high ISOs (reportedly) which is my main reason for the exchange. Upping the ISO and buying an f4 lens would be cheaper than using a low ISO (on the Canon) and buying a faster f2.8 to get the same shutter speed but maybe I am wrong?
 
Doubt it I'm only going on what I thought I read on here about the 7d being good at high iso and a pretty good all round camera. I've probably opened my mouth before checking haha.
 
I think you are probably right about the 7D being a better all round camera but every review I have read comparing the two cameras say that the nikon has far better high ISO capability.
So by buying a slower lens (maybe a 300mm prime) at f4 against a f2.8 (for the canon) and upping the ISO (Nikon) to get the same shutter speed would mean that I can save the initial cost of the D7000 body.
I would even maybe keep both cameras but that is an option I would have to explore and if my wife can be persuaded?
