I am considering to finally pack up Nikon F5 with the Nikon 35-70mm f2.8D Lens; thinking of replacing it with D7000. Is it true optically there's not much difference between 18-70mm f3.5/4.5 and 16-85mm f3.5/5.6. Not having used VR Lens is there much of an advantage of having that. I did use the 18-70mm very briefly on a D50 and felt it was o.k. Its not so much the range as its going to be just a holiday cam. Also have the Nikon 24-85mm f2.8/4 just sitting. Is that any good??; although I feel I may miss the wide angle range.
Thx in advance.

For me the 16-85mm VR is the best DX wide to mid range zoom.

I noticed a big difference in quality between it and the 18-70mm I had, but others have not seen as big a difference. For me though, not only was it the quality, but it was the extended range in either direction, but particularly at the wide end. 70mm and 85mm is not that much difference, but there is a big difference between 16mm and 18mm. ;)

The VR is also very useful when the light gets low, and the shutter speeds get slower, and you still want to hand hold.

There is a big price difference though, but I'd get the 16-85mm every time. I'm on my 2nd :D after having the first one nicked. :(

Thx very much; thats my mind made up for the 16-85 then; only wish Nikon did that as a kit lens rather than the 18-105 with the D7000....

I had a 16-85mm and I thought it was great. Nice an sharp and very versatile, especially with VR. I sorely doubt you will be disappointed with it if you get one

My old 18-70 is now sitting on a D7000 and new owner has reported complete happiness! :D

Upgraded to the 16-85, great lens and loved it. Unfortunately developed taste required wider, so... sigh.
...but the 16-85 is now full time on a D5100 and new owner is perfectly pleased too.

Point is, you can't go wrong, but 16-85 is a class above 18-70. The two mm extra reach is worth a lot. And VR!

Good luck!
