Would like to know if anyone has this combo and if so what are your views.Ive had the D90 for 9 months now and love it, use it with a 70-300 vr mostly for birding and nearly always in a hide.Im seriously thinking about getting the 300mm f4 with a 1.4 tc but am a bit concerned about the weight when attached to the D90, ie the body not being as big as the D300/700.Would appreciate some feedback,Cheers.

I have this combination and as long as you keep the shutter speed up it is very sharp. As to the weight it's not too heavy and it's very balanced especially if you have the grip. Focusing speed is quite fast over short distances but can take time to focus over the full range. It's easier to manually focus near to your subject then let the AFS take over. I have the Kenko TC and have had no problems with it.

Just started to use the combo on a tripod/monopod whilst out and about and getting better shots than handheld (I've not got the steadiest of hands).
If your in a hide I use it resting on a bean bag with good results.

In all it's a cracking combination

Thanks for getting back Gary and with news i wanted to hear.I thought i would have to get a grip and like yourself my hands arnt to steady.Have you any samples i could look at.Thanks again.

I used it with a D80, no problems at all excellent lens optically, sharp wide open even with the 1.4 TC, and I have no issues using it wide open with the 1.7TC on my D300.

Have a look in my gallery on here. Variety of shots from 300mm to 420mm with TC. The landing swan was hand held but rest are supported by Monopod/tripod or bean bag. I've had this combo since the summer and love it. It does take time to get used to as no VR but a bit of practice and your results will get better. You won't be disapointed :D

Nice shots of the tree sparrow with the 1.7 TC
Do you still get AF with this combo.

Thats not what I wanted to hear Martyn :D

Now how do I intercept the delivery man so the better half dosn't know :D:D

Do you get autofocus with the 1.7 TC. I have just bought the 300mm afs f4 to use with my D700

Thanks, didnt read the thread properly, stupid me

No problems ... I am sure Nikon just cover themselves when they say that the 1.7 will not AF with the f4 lenses, incase someone tries it in near darkness and starts complaining ... enjoy the 300 f4 AF-S, it is a superb lens, handy for butterflies and dragonflies with its 5 feet close focus.

Thanks Gary and thanks Martyn,im now confinced.Where would you say you would get the best deal, lens and 1.4tc ?
