nikon d90 iso range question?

have read in various reviews that the standard d90 iso range is expandable!
how is this achieved?
is it a firmware upgrade?

if it is, you'll need to activate it via the custom functions..

that's how my Canon does it.

I've not heard about it being expandable in terms of being able to add new functionality.

I think they use that term to refer to the 'L' and 'H' settings which sit below ISO200 and above ISO 3200 respectively and are basically software to enhance the shot to below and above those ISO levels.

Basically, all that expandable ISO does is underexpose by a stop, and boosts it in camera. Hence the noise levels are high.
