Nikon D90 vs Canon 550D For Transport Photography

I came across this forum on google, it seems very helpful.

I have been looking at a camera to buy for the last month and i am stuck between the canon 550d and the nikon d90

I specialize in agricultural photography.

I currently have an olympus e420 with a 14-44mm and a 44-150mm lens. I am disspointed with the wide angle lens but the zoom lens makes some really nice images. The main problems with the camera though are:

It gives very poor images in dark conditions. The images are very noisy. This is a big problem since the uk has very dark and grey skies even at the best of times lol

I also find that many images are not that sharp. The sharpness issue is a big concern of mine. I need a camera with a good autofocus!

Would the 550d and d90 be much better than my e420?

I have seen some sample images from a 550d and they dont seem as sharp as that from a d90.

What does anyone advise for outdoor transportation photography?

Both cameras will give cleaner output than the Olympus due to the larger sensors employed, particularly at higher ISOs. Both cameras will also produce lovely sharp images with the right lenses! The D90 however is a more advanced camera than the 550D, with larger viewfinder and beefier body. The 550D is better for those with smaller hands.

Images from a 550D will be as sharp as those from a D90, if equivalently sharp lenses are used. It might look softer at 100% because the files are higher resolution.
You can't rely on sample images, because they can have been taken with completely different types of lenses or with poor technique.
They might be better than your e420, but dark conditions are dark conditions, and no crop sensor camera can really


Maybe upgrading to some better olympus glass and a newer olympus camera would be better? Olympus make some incredible lenses, fast glass would be just as good as increasing ISO.
