Is it possible to use a teleconverter with Nikon DX lenses..??
 
Hi Jeff, In answer to your question. YES.

Bear in mind what your maximum focus aperture is for AF.

Using 1.4x on a lens with a maximum aperture of f5.6 on the D7100 is fine as it will AF at f8 but for all other DX bodies you will need a faster lens.

Just calculate your new maximum aperture when with the TC attached and you'll be fine :)
 
Be a bit wary and read the lens's manual. Some Nikon lenses will NOT accept the Nikon teleconverters - the rear element of the lens hits the front element in the teleconverter. While it's not a Dx only lens, the 70-300 VR is an example of the incompatibility, although some 3rd party teleconverters will fit it.
 
ooh just thought, i have a 16-50mm crop sony lens, i could use my 1.4 tc with it on my film camera :D

I would want to use a 1.4 converter on my Nikon 55 -300 VR lens, so which third party ones should I look for..?
 
The official list is here. Whilst your lens is f5.6 it would make it a minimum of f8 at 420mm. I don't think your d3200 is designed to auto focus at f8, I thought all dx except the d7100 was f5.6 max. It's possible you could lose AF completely (depending on light levels) and be manual focus only.

Some lenses are designed so nikon teleconverters will not physically fit. There are some third party ones like kenko that do fit some lenses that nikon says are incompatible. Teleconverters reduce IQ and AF speed too and are really designed to be used with a f2.8 or f4 lens.

Have a quick read of this on Flickr if you want to go down the teleconverter route with your 55-300.
