Question please;

Do Nikon make a pro (full-frame) camera body with around 21 m/pixel? kind of same as the Canon 5D Mk2..?

I don't know the Nikon range well, can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Appreciated.
 
Nikon D3X, 24.5 mpx for around £5k so no, nothing like the 5d2 really.

Nikon have traditionally stayed away from the MP battle with their high-end DSLRs and concentrated on better high ISO noise performance instead. As the technology of smaller photosites and greater pixel density improves they will, I'm sure, give in to the marketing departments demand for higher MP models.

This is what the marketeers would have you believe and up to a point it is true. however as the size of the photosites (the individual elements in the sensor) gets smaller then their signal to noise ratio reduces - you get more noise.

The number of pixels (market speak for photosites) goes up they have to get smaller and be more tightly packed to retain the same sensor size - so you get more noise :-(

It was told to me as

"Think of the megapixels as buckets. To get more MP on the sensor you have to make the buckets smaller, thus holding less detail from the scene and reducing the image quality".

Simplistic but so am I :)

That makes no sense.
Mega-pixels don't necessarily mean higher quality images, but they certainly do not REDUCE detail, indeed with good technique and lenses you'll get MORE detail.


To the OP, unless you find yourself limited by the 12 megapixels on your 5D I, I really don't think you should discount the D700 just because it doesn't have an exorbitant mega-pixel number.
For most people, other aspects of cameras should be far more important than megapixels :)
