Nikon G lens on older gear

I have a bunch of older gear - including film bodies and manual teleconverters - as well as my newer Nikon digital gear.

I know that if I try using my G lenses with my older gear I will have no aperture control, but would it still be possible to use them at a fixed maximum aperture, controlling exposure through shutter speed and ISO?

I know it would be very limiting and in very bright conditions it might be impossible to not over expose, but it could be fun to try it out - unless of course it is going to damage something.

Thoughts?
 
the aperture will be the smallest so i wouldnt worry about overexposing ,,,is the older gear film ? then id go for ilford xp2 and then you can change the iso ( within reason ) cant remember off hand but its something like between 200 and 800
 
It's the other way round - take your G lens off and you will see that it defaults to the minimum aperture. It's a pain really.
 
Yes, 35mm film gear. I was mainly thinking about the teleconverters.

Interesting, I was assuming it would be at maximum (as in largest - f/3.8 or whatever) aperture, not smallest
 
The aperture closes as soon as you take it off the camera. See for yourself! :)
