Higher resolution than the mounted CCTVs means better chance to identify/prove in court the individual was present at the protest.
Makes sense if they've had known perps get off due to others testifying they were at a different location.
Several thousand pounds worth of camera equipment to help convict people securely is money well spent, compared to turning up in court with a ropey still image from CCTV cameras that allows sufficient reasonable doubt to be cast over the image being of the individual.

Blame his Tonyness, it stems from the Good Friday Agreement, when the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary) changed to PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) to make it more 'acceptable' to the Nationalists, who want Ireland reunified.

...because .police.uk is the constabulary TLD equivalent of .co.uk. Each force has it's own address as a second level domain.

Both the Royal Navy and Army use Nikon and I expect the RAF do to as they run the Tri-Service joint Photographic School at RAF Cosford. (They always used to)
Forensic Photographers ( CSIs / SOCOs) trained at NPIA Harperly Hall are also taught on Nikons which are the cameras of choice. Most UK police forces use Nikon in the forensic departments but as there are 52 police forces all with different budgets some will purchase other systems.

I think you will find that particular emoticon represents thinking rather than "wonderment" I don't believe that an emoticon for "wonderment" exists on this forum.2.
Why would anyone be "appearing in front of a magistrate"? No crime was being committed here. Even the P.S.N.I, even though they try, will find it difficult to arrest someone for not committing a crime, never mind it getting to the stage of a magistrate being involved. = Grin = eek
