Nikon Interval Shooting Issue

Ive recently tried to use this function on my D5000 to take some star trail shots but for some reason the camera is only taking 3 shots rather than the amount ive entered. Ive repeated this process in the house just minutes ago and its still doing the same. Ive tried setting the file to JPEG rather than the initial RAW setting to no avail. I know i can put the camera in burst mode and lock my remote shutter and just time one hour for example but i still would like to know why its not working. Also is it possible to lock the shutter release in camera? I cant see any such setting. I have been using my MC-36 copy remote but if i set 1 second intervals the camera hasnt recovered quick enough and misses every other shot so i had to put 2 second intervals.
ANy ideas??

Sandisk Extreme. When it didnt work i used my MC-36 and took 120 30 second shots in RAW so it couldnt be that. Sorry, i didnt point that out initially.

Is there a function on the D5000 that limits the number of consecutive frames (ie to prevent continuous release in your bag)? There is on the D300, I set it to max (100 frames), then it's just a matter of remembering to unlock the cable release and relock it sometime in the last few frames.
 
Yes the D5000 does have that function, I've never used it though.

Intersting, so you think mine could be set to 3? That said though i have put my camera in burst and took 10 ore more in one burst......

Right, bare with me as i have the camera out and am experimenting. I have my 35mm f1.8 prime on and have just set it away to shoot 20 1 second shots at f4.5. It got to 10 and stopped. I upped it to 30 secs and its done 1 and stopped. Ive just put it to f1.8 and 1/13th and set it to take 30 shots with 1 second interval and it went right through to the 30. So is this a camera buffering issue? Why can i achieve the 120 shots using the remote with no issue?
As i mentioned i have a Sandisk Extreme 8gb card which is nearly empty.

I had a similar problem a while back...

If you set it to take a 30 second shot, every 30 seconds, or 31 seconds, it'll eventually break, because it can't clear the buffer quick enough, and it'll just stop taking shots. I don't think it uses the buffer to store more than one image when using the invervalometer.

When doing a series of 30 second shots, I had to set it to 34 seconds to ensure the buffer was cleared in time for the next shot. It then took a full sequence of 100 shots without problem.

Are you also using long exposure NR, or high ISO NR - That will add quite a lot to the time it takes to clear the buffer as well.

Thing is though why is it working no problem via the MC-36 remote? 120 30 second exposures with 2 second interval no problem.
Are you saying when using in camera interval shooting it doesnt buffer and thats why it stops?
Also i have the NR turned off otherwise doing this would be impossible as it takes the same amount of time to process each shot. If you leave gaps more than 1-2 seconds the star trails im shooting have gaps in them.
