When buying a Nikon lens is the country of production important?

My 28-300 was made in Thailand while my 50mm and 24-70 were both made in China.

Do Nikon assign production of a specific lens to s specific factory or can you buy the same lens but made in different countries?
If so does the quality of the lens differ?

ooohh, what a good question .... to which I don't have the answer :)

From a manufacturing and quality control angle I would expect all lenses of the same type to be manufactured at the same factory but that each factory would manufacture several different types of lens. It's hard enough to get precision products built to the consistent quality by different assembly operatives in one factory so that problem would be multiplied significantly if using more than one factory.

Of course, I could be totally wrong :D
