Nikon lens repair

Nikon D800 on Tripod. Nikon 24-70 on camera. At shoreline for sunrise. Tripod unbalanced. Tripod falls forward. Nikon 24-70 hits rocks head-on. At this point I think I might have said "golly gosh" - or words to that effect.....

Anyway, the WA adaptor protected the glass, which was undamaged (unlike the adaptor) but lens seemed fine otherwise, autofocus included. It was only later that I realised that the zoom had jammed at 26mm - locked solid in fact.

My stuff is covered by house insurance but I might not claim, depending on cost of repair (and I am assuming that it's repairable and won't need replaced. I have emailed both Fixation and the Nikon UK Repair Service asking for estimates but I'll probably have to post it off to get one.

I was wondering if I should bve considering any other repair services? Anyone got any recommendations?
 
Martin at lens locker in Twickenham often repairs 24-70 that get stuck. Maybe call him?
 
Thanks guys. Martin at Lens Locker was helpful but he outsources his repairs to H Lehmann, so I have added them to the list. Think I will probably just send it to Nikon - all these services offer free estimates and charge for return shipping. Might as well stick with the mothership I think, even thought they have advised that a replacement zoom mechanism would be £650.... that would definitely be an insurance job!
 
you got insurance, any reason why not going through them. appreciate if the repair is equal to the excess or marginally higher. I have insurance just wondering the logic of buying something then never use it...that's all. appreciate thee will be a claim record against your household, but that's one off and the relative cost of that would all be taken into consideration for the renewal etc.
 
Like you say all depend on price. There is an excess plus the loss of NCB to take into account. Sending it off to Nikon today so I will know soon enough.

I never had insurance previously but bought one for this year as I have other bits in the house that I wanted to insure now.

but I guess it is from 0yr NCB and it isn't expensive either.
 
We get a lot of jammed zooms on Nikon 24-70s and 14-24s. If you're interested I can dig into our repairs database and have a look at what they typically cost.

Thanks Stewart. I suppose it's academic now - it's on its way to Nikon (very slick returns process). If it's a replacement lens or zoom unit then it will be an insurance claim. If it's under £200 I'll likely just grin and bear it.
