Nikon Lens to EF mount

I'm looking to get an adaptor to use Nikon lenses (unsure what fitment, the current type) on an EF body. I guess it's going to be fully manual which is fine, auto focus or even focus assist would be nice though. Cheap as possible as this is just an experiment. Anyone got one? Are they worth the effort? I wouldn't be buying any Nikon lenses, just borrowing them from uni.

The focus confirm adaptors have a reputation for shorting the contacts and causing serious damage so probably best avoided.

You will need Nikon lenses with manual aperture control and stop down metering will be required.

So I could only use the older lenses? I quite like the aperture ring on a lens compared to doing it on the body, unsure what type of the lenses the uni has though, think they're all far more modern. Probably be easier to just borrow a D300S with the lens if I ever want to use one I guess.
