I have a d600 and a 8mm fisheye. The d600 lets you put manual lens data in auto meter so I have put in 8mm and f3.5.
This works find but this lens does not have the extra mechanical bits (AI?) that inform the camera when the aperture has been changed.
does this matter ? It doesn't appear to make any difference or shoudl i be delving into the menu every time I change aperture ?

The D600 has a black ring with a tab around the mount that interacts with the aperture ring on the lens. Set the lens to its minimum aperture and then you can adjust the aperture with the sub command dial. Also, there's an option in the menus that allows you to directly adjust the aperture with the ring on the lens. Both should allow you to use all the metering modes.
