Nikon Models Higher ISO Noise

This is just out of general interest. I was just wondering how Nikon DSLR models compare to one another when it comes to ISO noise. So far I have come up with this from google.

1) D3s
2) Joint D3 and D700
3) D5000, D90, D300 and D300s are all quite similar
4) D40
5) Joint D40x, D60 and D3000

I also know the D200 is not as good as the D300 but don't know how it compares to the lower models.

Though I am struggling to work out where the D1, D1x, D1h, D2h, D2x, D3x, D100, D200, D50, D70, D70s and D80 fit in to the picture. Can any one help fill in the blanks for me? It does not have to be exact just approximate.

Thanks

Most of that is going to be fairly subjective to be honest. Not sure where most of those fit in.

The earlier nikon models were all fairly noisy, canon had them beat on noise back then.

I know the D50 and D70s have good high ISO noise control..

It depends what you call high ISO - I think 400 is high.

That is because I cut my teeth shooting motorsport on velvia 50, with a 500f4 that makes you think about your shots. Try shooting powerboats with velvia 100, a polariser and a 200mm lens from a moving helicopter or boat to boat! You have the quivalent of ISO 12 to use when polarised. That was what you had to do in those days.
