Nikon SB700 and SB910

After using my Metz AF50 flash gun for awhile now and altho it's pretty decent but i decided to buy a Nikon flashgun instead. I will still keep my Metz for remote/slave use for other purposes. This comes down to Nikon Sb700 and Sb910 if i buying it brand new or uses. I know the SB910 is much more powerful, bigger and heavier compare to the sb700. To mix this even more i throw in SB800 since they can be purchases under £200 used.

The stuff i shoot is mainly non-paid stuff and I do assist my friend as a second shooter for weddings. Otherwise I will only shoot general family shots, portrait of my wife, wild life and landscape.
 
I had 2 SB900's which were easily good enough for studio work, got rid and bought a SB700.

I was bitterly disappointed with the cycles I got per charge and the power most important.

I found with the SB700, I couldn't really bounce it at decent speeds unless I was in the 400-800 ISO range and on full power.

The SB900 would easily let me bounce on 1/2 power and still get decent shutter speeds at base ISO.

For me it's simple, if you need power, get the big model, if you don't then the SB700 is good enough... providing your model gives you more than 50 shots ;)

I'm sure I just had a bad model. Wasn't the batteries as in my jessops flash they still last absolutely ages before empty.
 
In terms of budget of course buying the SB700 makes sense because is £100 cheaper then the SB910 but I will lose the power of the 910 for size and weight.

Eventually I will start doing some studio stuff but is not on the to do list right now.

I kinda like the SB910 similar because of power.
 
You would probably do well to grab the 910 if you assist with weddings, especially if you use a zoom. I use the 700 most of the time on my D7100 at a short focal range so it does what i need both indoors and out. I slap the ISO up to 800 indoors and mooch around with a Stofen on, gets nice results.

For the price of an SB910 you could have two Yongnuo flashes with the new wireless Triggers......worth looking into....My triggers arrived yesterday, pretty decent. I don't have a Yongnuo flash, but i'm certainly considering one.

The wedding stuff i shoot i most likely use flash outdoor but the church stuff we not allow to use flash within the church during the ceremony. Most group shots were taken outdoor except a few will do inside the church.

SB700 sounds decent but i'm too concern about the lack of power that alot of people keeping saying. In real life shooting situation does it really that noticeable?
 
Do you use off camera flash at all? I would imagine the extra power the 910 gives off would be beneficial for this.

If you only assist, then on camera flash is probably better for you, in which case you can probably get away with the 700 like i do. Its a tough one to call really. I personally do plan to get a 910 in the future anyway, i just don't feel i need it yet for what i do...sorry, i'm not much use :D
 
Mainly on camera flash i do right now but would hoping to get into off camera flash as well in the near future. Either get the SB700 now and then get a 910 when i actually need it or just get the 910 now lol

I personally think it's only noticeable when bouncing or shooting through a diffuser. If you're flashing on camera without then it's likely you won't be going to full power.

However....

With the 910 you'll be able to high speed sync and still bounce. Very handy.

High speed on the 700 isn't great due to the lack of power.

That kinda sums it up, i think i will go for the SB910.
