Nikon SB700 How do you stop pre flashes?

I've got a Nikon sb700 flash but I find that it emits 2-3 small flashes before it fires the final flash when taking the picture. I want to use the flash as fill flash but I find the pre flashes a problem in some situations for wildlife. It can also be annoying for portraits too. Any one know how to stop them or if its even possible?

Is your flash or body set to red eye reduction?

As Phil said this would likely be the bodys flash mode rather than the flash itself. The ttl preflash is almost unnoticeable

If you shoot with flash in manual there I'll be no iTTL pre flash. But it oes Lund like you have red eye mode activated as the pre flash is only is rentable by oscilloscope

Thanks everyone. It does seem like it was the red eye reduction that was causing it. Now it's turned off there is just the one flash. Thanks again Rob
