Nikon ss tops out at 1/250s

Hi all
A friend of mine has a Nikon, a D300, which in aperture priority mode will not select a shutter speed above 1/250s.
I'm a Canon user, so don't know the answer, but my immediate reaction was either something to do with flash synch speed (though he does not use a speedlight flash), or a custom function that limits the range (as can be set in some Canons if you so wish).
Can anyone suggest what he can look at?

It's likely a common 'bug', the camera is confused about the existance of a flash.

Usually rotating the shutter speed selector until you get to the far left (ie, to B, and perhaps beyond), then back to the right, fixes it.

Failing that, I think I read that putting the camera into mirror lock up mode for cleaning the sensor, works too.

He ended up taking it to a camera shop - it was a custom function he says. All good now, thanks.
